Shopping in Thessaloniki Greece is a pleasure. There’s excellent shopping for fashions, specialty foods, antiques, books, and unique souvenirs. For many visitors from the Balkans, Thessaloniki is a major shopping destination.
As for fashion – Thessaloniki has a long and proud history of excellence in textiles. But maybe even more importantly, the people of Thessaloniki – and the women in particular – are known throughout Greece for their sense of style. The main streets of downtown are an intriguing mix of street fashion and finely tailored Mediterranean elegance.
There are shopping experiences in the city for every taste. Thessaloniki has excellent luxury shopping and boutique shopping, as well as vintage clothing. You’ll find many local craftspeople creating elegant contemporary goods. And antique shopping and flea market browsing are great in a city like this, with such a rich historic setting.
Also, if you want to do some serious big shopping in Thessaloniki, there’s a choice of shopping malls. If you prefer the urban shopping experience, you can enjoy a day shopping right in the downtown on Tsimiski, the main Thessaloniki shopping street
Shopping Malls in Thessaloniki
For a big shopping Thessaloniki splurge, you can find the best shopping mall in Thessaloniki for your taste. Two of these are outlet shopping malls for discount shopping on name brand goods. Three of the Thessaloniki shopping malls also have very nice cinemas.
The Shopping Center of Thessaloniki – the Main Shopping Streets Downtown
Thessaloniki has a chic urban center and a great selection of both boutiques and large stores from international brands. There is also fine luxury shopping in the downtown of Thessaloniki.
The Main Thessaloniki Shopping Street – Tsimiski
The main Thessaloniki shopping street in Thessaloniki is Tsimiski. This broad and shady boulevard is lined with representatives of many of the major international brands, such a Zara, Mango, H & M, Marks & Spencer, Benetton, Artisti Italiani, and Massimo Dutti. In between are smaller boutiques and stores of Greek brands, as well as several stores for athletic gear. You’ll also find Attica – a large Greek department store with a shop-in-shop concept. It offers you many boutiques under one roof, with the convenience of a department store with central sales and service.
As you go towards the sea, shopping gets more exclusive.
Shopping on Mitropoleos Street, Thessaloniki
Parallel to Tsimiski street and one block closer to the sea is the smaller and somewhat more exclusive Mitropoleos Street. This is a great place to shop for more unique items. You’ll find smaller boutiques with exclusive local brands, like Fransa, or designers, like Penny Sabbado. Philly is one of the best small dress shops in town, with looks from Fever London, Emily and Fin, Yumi, and others.
Thessaloniki Luxury Shopping – Proxenou Koromila
For a serious sartorial splurge, go to Proxenou Koromila. This is the most exclusive Thessaloniki shopping street. This shorter street is just one short block up from the sea, parallel to Nikis avenue. It runs between Ploutarchou in the west and Morgentau in the east. Here you’ll find Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, and outposts of other exclusive brands for a Thessaloniki luxury shopping fix. There are also many very selective small boutiques with unique offerings. Proxenou Koromila is also one of the most pleasant streets for cafes and bars – and you know you’ll be dressed for them.
Vintage Clothing Thessaloniki
Thessaloniki has excellent vintage shopping experiences. There are many stores with low-budget finds, and also shops with carefully-sourced vintage clothing and accessories. Our favorites are Elephant Gang on Hippodromiou for great buys and selection, and Vaudeville Room – in the fabulous Roman Forum Neighborhood – for beautiful vintage pieces in prime condition, including accessories and costume jewelry.
Thessaloniki Souvenirs
Just like the city itself, Thessaloniki souvenirs go beyond the expected and offer genuine quality and character. From the classic “Komboloi” and copper “Briki” to unique high-style industrial design art pieces, you’ll find appropriate mementos of your stay. Our favorite Thessaloniki souvenir shop is the boutique-style HelloFrom – on chic Proxenou Koromila – where design and personal meaning come together for quality lifestyle souvenirs.
Thessaloniki Jewelry
Fine artisans make uniquely beautiful pieces, from classic, to contemporary, to truly avant garde pieces of art. From the high end collections at established jewelers such as Vildiridis to the modern creations of young talented jewelers, there is a huge span of styles. For us, the work of Yannis Gounaridis at Bord de l’eau is truly extraordinary.
Specialty Food Shops in Thessaloniki
Edible souvenirs are the best souvenirs. Thessaloniki is full of specialty food shops that showcase the best in artisanal and indigenous products.
Wine Shop Thessaloniki
Oenophiles are going to love it here. Greece is a fascinating county for wines. Many vintners are cultivating indigenous grape varieties and making wines with a string sense of terroir. Some wine shops in Thessaloniki are exploring local wines and local grapes. Try Mbakal, in the Ano Ladadika – they stock 440 Greek wines.
